Description

At The Cultivated Collector we like to say, “Z is the most expensive letter of the alphabet.” That’s because Z represents Zagato, the iconic coachbuilder responsible for some of the most beautiful cars ever made, for which collectors will pay a premium. This Lancia Appia Sport is no exception. Bodied by Zagato, it possesses a timeless silhouette that makes it as stunning today as it was when it debuted in 1961.

The last and ultimate of Zagato’s Appias was the Appia Sport, which premiered at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show. Only 200 were built, starting in March1961 with chassis #1001 and ending in January 1963 with chassis #1201. The Sport is the only Appia Zagato for which production numbers are certain, as it wasn’t until 1960 that the coachbuilder started keeping detailed registers of its production.

Unlike its predecessor, the Appia GTE, the Sport was built on a short wheelbase chassis. At 92.5” the Sport’s wheelbase was 6.3” shorter than the GTE’s, resulting in a 7.9” shorter overall length. Adapting the GTE to create the Appia, became the task for Zagato’s young superstar, Ercole Spada. He created a car that from the front, was similar to the open headlight GTE, but Spada gave it a much rounder rear, with tail lights fully sunken into the bodywork, and a fastback roofline. Possessing a light-weight, streamlined, aerodynamic, aluminum body, the car weighs only about 1,800 lbs. and has a top speed of just under 100 mph, quite brisk for its time.

This car, chassis no. 812.05.1093, had spent its entire life in Italy, until 2016 when we were awestruck by its exquisite condition and decided to bring this beauty to the US. While in Italy, the car was lovingly owned and cared for by the same family for 42 years, and preserved by the mild climate in Naples. The car is highly original with a single repaint completed ten years ago.  The repaint retained the original exterior colors of the car, while the vibrant Azzurro Paroli interior is original and wonderfully preserved. The car comes complete with the original books. Fully sorted, this Lancia Appia Sport Zagato is one of the most original and authentic examples in existence and is eligible for many of the world’s most prestigious events.
